Over the last year and a half that I've been in charge of my own editing services company, I have made a dream come true. I edit fiction novels full-time in the comfort of my home. I love every day, every author, every character, every plot. Why do I do it? Here's my story.
On March 27, 2020, my life changed forever. Like so many during the pandemic, I faced a workplace furlough. It wasn't entirely unexpected. A few rounds of layoffs had happened in years prior, and the state of the economy at the time sided in favor of cutting costs as much as possible to ensure a business's survival. However, it's a day I'll never forget.
After a few weeks of grieving a company I'd spent over 6 years of my life at, carving a place for myself and enjoying making connections with authors and staff, I decided to look ahead at the opportunity this situation presented.
I could still do what I loved, but on my own terms.
I could become my own boss, make my own decisions, plan my own schedule. Possibilities seemed endless.
And so I launched full force into formerly Kristen S. Editorial (now Booked with Kristen), a fiction book editing and writing services company targeting self-publishing and first-time authors. Using connections via LinkedIn, references, and cold pitching, I slowly but surely carved my mark in the fiction market.
Over a year later, my company continues to grow. I've cultivated a roster of fresh, talented writers; gained some amazing content editing and writing opportunities; and grown so much as a businessperson.
There's no better joy for me than working with stories—and writers—every day. Bringing books into the world is what I love most. Worldbuilding, character development, grammar, spelling, punctuation … it all matters to me.
Don't get me wrong: freelancing is tough! A constant balance of work, marketing, and promotion. But I love being able to do what I love every. single. day.
